This role of Director, R&D, Diagnostic Research & Detection
Technology represents Research & Developments most senior position
in biosensor applied research and technology. Responsibilities will
include the development and implementation of sensing technologies
for West devices and components including initiating organic
applications of research, identifying inorganic opportunities for
building block technologies, and creating a portfolio of hypothesis
testing experiments. This role requires working across the
organization, interfacing with Advanced engineering teams and, via
technical content expertise, lead the organizations sensor
development. The successful candidate will cultivate a vision for
the future of healthcare in the context of possibilities presented
by dynamic bio-monitoring, leveraging deep expertise to impact the
patient experience of generations of products to come.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Leverage and nurture (internally/externally acquired)
technological knowhow gained through internal capability building,
collaborations, KOL relationships, and other leading edge sources
to develop and leverage world class capabilities for biosensor
Provide foundational knowledge and synthesize diverse technical
capabilities across a broad set of biomedical disciplines, such as
biology, medical, chemical, electronic and/or biochemistry.
Conduct strategic and technical assessment of external technologies
at target companies for partnering and potential acquisitions. Via
collaborations, develop/acquire novel technologies through
internal/external Research & Technology Development programs.
Responsible for sensing technology development and integration of

electro-chemical sensors, algorithms, power/battery technology,
wireless transmission technology, and new manufacturing

Actively scout state of the art technology as it applies to our
industry and enriches the development staff with cogent appraisals
of overarching trends Is accountable for the performance and
results of multiple related technology development teams, both
internal and external Set organizational priorities, allocate
resources, and development methodology to achieve department

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science,
Software Engineering, Biochemistry, or related technical discipline
Experience developing diagnostic sensing technology Project
management and team leadership experience Experience with data
analysis and packages like Python and/or MATLAB Minimum 10 Years of
experience in applied research and/or product development Proven
self-starter who runs towards critical issues, ambiguous
requirements, or loosely defined challenges with a demonstrated
ability to rally teams to achieve business results.
Experience with common test equipment/software (network analyzers,
logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, protocol and signaling testers).
The ability to use the test equipment in a hands-on lab

Masters or Ph.D. in in electrical engineering, biomedical
engineering, physics, biology, chemistry, or related field Previous
direct involvement in early stage product or technology
development, technology readiness assessments, applied research,
etc Experience with electromechanical system design, motor
controllers, and rigorous power management strategies for battery
powered devices Demonstrated thought leadership in designing the
future embedded systems, software engineering and development
associated with data acquisition and processing devices on SOC
(system of a chip) architecture.
Knowledge of different wireless communication systems such as
GSM/UMTS/CDMA/LTE, 802.11, mesh networking, low power protocols
(Bluetooth low energy, ANT, etc.), wireless power transfer, NFC,
