DescriptionThe Department of Theatre and Dance at The University of Texas at Austin invites applications from qualified scholars specializing in theatre history. The appointment will be at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level, with an anticipated start date of Fall 2025. Possible areas of expertise are open with flexibility in focus and scale, including local, national, regional and/or global history and timeframes from ancient to the 21st century. We seek methodological and geographic expertise that complements and/or expands current faculty strengths. We are especially interested in expertise in the theatrical histories of Europe and their transnational influences and routes of circulation. Duties will include development of a nationally recognized profile as a scholar, undergraduate and graduate-level teaching, contributions to the department's core theater history curriculum as well as to the Performance as Public Practice (PPP) Graduate Program's courses, development of courses on the candidate's areas of expertise, and mentorship of graduate students. The successful candidate will serve as faculty in the highly collaborative and interdisciplinary PPP program. This program focuses on the historical development, cultural and theoretical contexts, and artistic significance of theatre, dance and performance disciplines and institutions, as well as the interrelationships of these fields and the role of performance in public spheres. PPP works closely with the departmental programs in Acting, Dance, Directing and Playwriting, Drama and Theatre for Youth and Communities/Theatre Education, and Live Design and Production. This position requires relocation to Austin, Texas. As an integral part of the thriving creative culture of Austin, Texas, the Department of Theatre and Dance offers an array of programs to prepare artists, scholars, and teachers to make profound contributions to theatre and dance through engaging study, interdisciplinary collaboration, and exceptional performance experiences. The department has 40 full-time faculty members and 13 full-time staff members and is housed in well-equipped facilities, which include black box, proscenium, and lab theatres, teaching and practice spaces, and state-of-the-art design and computing labs. The department produces six large scale and numerous small productions per year, including the largest student-driven biennial New Works Festival in the country. Faculty and students have access to world-class research centers such as the , the and the . • Ph.D. in theatre history or a related field.
• Accomplishment in research and publications consistent with the expectations of a tenure-track position at a research-focused institution.
• Demonstrated capacity to lead, develop, and deliver theatre history curriculum for an undergraduate population.
• Ability to develop and deliver core and topics-based undergraduate and graduate courses.
• University-level teaching experience.Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in mentoring and advising graduate and undergraduate students.
